[Also in Divisions B3 and F2] A plain tube 4 is helically corrugated without internal support by screwing on a converging external die 1 which forms helical grooves in the tube, followed by a die 2 which compresses these grooves axially. The screw thread of the first die 1 is of constant pitch, but the bore diameter converges in the direction of motion. The die 2 is of constant bore but decreasing pitch. The dies may be angularly offset to produce a better finish. The radial and axial compression could be simultaneous, although this is not preferred. A third nut 3 of uniform pitch verifies the finish, and the second nut 2 may be omitted.
