Abstract

1,239,919. Retractable undercarriage. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 25 Sept., 1968 [2 Aug., 1967], No. 35569/67. Heading B7G. A retractable aircraft undercarriage allowing the slinging of stores beneath the fuselage has two main leg assemblies each of which is extended from the fuselage first by rotation about an axis 10 which is in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the aircraft and is at a substantial angle, e.g. 60 degrees, to the horizontal, and subsequently by downward rotation about a second axis 11, which is at this time parallel to the longitudinal axis, in order to bring the landing wheels 14 vertical as shown. Landing wheels 14 are mounted in a conventional scissors type arrangement 15, 16 to an oleopneumatic shock-absorber 20 pivotably mounted on a trunnion bracket 22 itself pivotably mounted on the fuselage through pins 25, 26 so as to be able to move about axis 10. The undercarriage is normally locked in position by a mechanical uplock. When the leg assembly is to be lowered the doors to hatches 12, 13 are opened and the trunnion 22 is pivoted about axis 10 by means of jack 31 and then locked (Fig. 6, not shown) by stays 29, 30 which are held by a locking jack 33 and toggle linkage (43, 44, Fig. 3, not shown). The wheels 14 and shock-absorber 20 are then pivoted about the now horizontal axis 11 by a jack 32 to the vertical position and locked in place by a further jack 34 which holds a toggle linkage 23, 24.
