Abstract
1,238,902. Gamma manganese dioxide. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 26 Aug., 1968, No. 40686/68. Heading C1A. A gamma manganese dioxide is prepared by reacting an aqueous solution containing 5-30% by wt. of manganese sulphate or manganese chloride with chlorine, the solution being maintained at pH 0À5-3À0, terminating the reaction before formation of permanganate ion in the solution, separating, washing and drying the precipitated gamma MnO 2 . Seed crystals of carbon, gamma manganese dioxide containing occluded carbon, or gamma manganese dioxide may be used, in the proportion 1À5-10% by wt., and the reaction preferably carried out at 25-80‹ C. The carbon seed crystals preferably are particles having a " chain-like " appearance under high magnification. The pH may be maintained by the addition of a neutralizing agent which does not form an insoluble, inseparable precipitate with the manganese salt, e.g. Mg(OH) 2 when manganese sulphate is used; Ca(OH) 2 when manganese chloride is used.
