Abstract
1,238,109. Boring earth and rock. ATLAS COPCO A.B. 23 Sept., 1969 [4 Oct., 1968; 4 Dec., 1968], No. 46734/69. Heading E1F. [Also in Division B3] A rotary rock drill comprises two frame mounted chucks 21, 27 one of which is movable along the axis of a drill string 23 by a pressure fluid operated reversible feed motor 17. The movable chuck 27 is rotatable by an hydraulic motor 32 mounted thereon and has jaws 46, Fig. 4, biassed away from the drill string by spring plates 47. Pressure fluid forces the jaws to grip the drill string by compressing a sleeve piston 43. The chuck 21 is axially stationary and spring biassed to grip the drill string and releases the string when supplied with fluid. The fluid conduits of the chucks are connected to a common supply conduit in an hydraulic control circuit. Fig. 6 (not show) so that the chucks may alternate their engagement with the drill string on successive pressurisation and depressurisation of the common supply conduit. By connecting the common supply conduit to an appropriate supply conduit of the feed motor, the drill string may be advanced or withdrawn by the movable chuck. Drill pipe joints may be made and broken by controlling both chucks to grip simultaneously. The chuck 21 may be rotatable through a limited angle to produce an impact for breaking a joint. Both chucks may be opened simultaneously for initial insertion of a drill bit 26, which may be a core bit.
