Abstract

1,234,242. High pressure forging. KOBE STEEL Ltd. 1 Aug., 1968 [1 Aug., 1967], No. 36670/68. Heading B3H. A high pressure hammer 10 to be used in conjunction with similar hammers to compress a workpiece M preferably of metal has its operative surface 20 convex. The convex surface may be spherical, parabolic or ellipsoidal. The hammer is made of tungsten carbide and the radius of curvature R of the surface is approximately equal to twice the diagonal length L of the surface. The ratio of the applied pressure P n and the pressure generated at the operative surface P 2 is improved over the ratio for conventional hammers with planar operative surfaces, Fig. 2 (not shown). Pressures of about 100,000 atmospheres can be generated on the workpiece by a set of hammers with curved operative surfaces without damaging the surface.
