Abstract

[Also in Division C5] Inorganic and organic fibres are lubricated by applying thereto an emulsion comprising the product obtained by (1) forming a dispersion of at least one diorganosiloxane in an aqueous medium and (2) polymerising the diorganosiloxane while in the dispersed state, at least 50% of the silicon-bonded organic radicals in the polymerised diorganosiloxane being methyl radicals. Any remaining organic radicals in the polymerised diorganosiloxane may be monovalent hydrocarbon radicals containing two or more carbon atoms and may be alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or aryl radicals, 10% or less of the total organic radicals may be hydrogen atoms or substituted monovalent hydrocarbon radicals, e.g.- gamma -' aminopropyl, N - aminoethylgamma amino-isobutyl, hydroxypropyi and 3,3, 3-trifluoro propyi radicals. There may be present in. the emulsion during the polymerisation more than one type of diorganosiloxane such that the polymerised product is copolymeric, methyl - octadecyl siloxane ,units or Rale8j,fc e.g.- a, copolymer of dimethylsiloxane units and methyl octadecyl siloxane. units or of dimethylsiloxane units and trimethyl siloxane' units. The polymerized diorganosiloxane may have a. viscosity of 15- 150,000 cs at 25‹C. The emulsion may also contain surface active agents, e.g. the condensation. products of ethylene oxide with fatty acids or alcohols, sorbitan monostearate, polyvinyl alcohol .and sodium salts of alkylated aryl ether sulphates, hydrocarbon waxes, polyethylene waxes, corrosion inhibitors and preservatives. Yarns or-threads made from nylon, polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, carbon, polypropylene, acrylic, polyurethane, cotton or glass fibres including sewing threads of nylon or polyethylene terephthalate may be treated. The emulsion may be applied by lick roller, spraying or immersion so that at least 0.2% by weight of the polymerised diorgano siloxane is applied to the fibres.
