Abstract

1,224,305. Pipe couplings. C. K. WALTHER, [trading as CARL KURT WALTHER]. 2 April, 1969 [2 April, 1968], No. 17229/69. Heading F2G. A coupling for pipes &c. includes male and female members 2, 1, the member 1 being formed with an aperture 4 within which is disposed a locking element in the form of a ball 3 and the member 2 being provided with a circumferential groove 9, and a locking sleeve 8 spring-biased towards a position for retaining the two members in a locked position. The free end of the sleeve extends substantially as far as the free end of the member 2 when in the forward biased position thereof, and the outer surface of the member preceding the groove is formed with a shoulder which, on insertion of the member 2 into the member 1, forces the ball 3 outwardly of the aperture. An internal shoulder 7 on the sleeve abuts the protruding portion of the ball to prevent further longitudinal movement of the sleeve until the groove is in alignment with the aperture whereupon snap-action, longitudinal movement of the sleeve forces the ball along the aperture and into engagement with the with the groove to lock the two members together. The member 1 may carry a cover sleeve 5, and fluid-tightness between the members may be effected by a gasket 13 in contact with a section 14 of the member 2. In a modification, the coupling comprises a member having end-to-end female members and two male members.
