Abstract
1,218,835. Soldering. H. KRIEG. 6 May, 1968 [6 May, 1967], No. 21302/68. Heading B3R. A device for soldering and unsoldering components on printed circuits comprises a handle 12, a bit 1 having an axial bore 10 extending from one end of at least a portion of the bit to the other, a sleeve 7 connecting the handle to the bit, a heating element 4 in the sleeve to heat the bit and a slidable pin 11 extending into the axial bore in the bit from a retracted position in which the end of a wire of a component can enter the bore, into an advanced position in which the pin projects from the bit to push the wire out of a hole in which it is soldered. The metal sleeve 7 extending from the wood or plastics handle 12 has a collar 8 at its lower end in which the copper bit 1 is held by a screw 9, the bit entering the bore in an electric heating element 4 held in the lower end of the sleeve 7. The pin 11 has reduced diameter portions 13, 14 on its lower end which project into a reduced diameter portion 15 of the bore 10 of the bit and slides at its upper end through bores 16, 17 in plates 18, 19 fixed in a recess 20 in the handle. A compression spring 25 is arranged between the upper plate 18 and a stop 24 on the pin and a ball ended lever 21 is fixed to the pin to be movable in a slot in the handle having horizontal and vertical portions. In operation with the pin its retracted position as shown the heated bit is placed over a wire extending from a printed circuit to melt the solder joint and then the lever 21 is moved from the horizontal leg of the slot to the vertical portion when the spring 25 urges the pin downwardly to cause the portion 14 of the pin to push the wire from the board and to clean the hole of solder. In a modification the bit has one portion coaxial with the handle and a second portion at an angle to the axis of the handle, the pin then being mounted for movement along the axis of the second portion of the bit by a two-armed operating lever on the exterior of the handle.
