A circular knitting machine for pile fabric has a dial 16 with radially oriented knitting needles and pattern wheel operated vertical jacks 48 over which the pile yam 20 is placed to form the pile loops. The body yam is placed over the needle latches on the inside of the packs and the pile yam is placed on the outside of the jacks so that the pile loops are formed on the outside of the fabric. The jacks may have stepped ends and be raised to different heights to form pile loops of different heights or may be retained beneath the needles so that both body and pile yarns are knitted together to form stitches with no pile loops. The long pile loops may be sheared.
