In a smallwave loom having a four tier batten 4 the height of the batten is controlled from a jacquard controlled mechanism 21 through rods 17-19 each of which is connected to a separate lifting rod 20, and levers and rods 9-13, the lifting rod 20 being moved by two mutilated gears 23, 28 which engage each other under control of the jacquard. The lifting arrangement comprises a lever 15a pivoted at its centre on arm 14, one end of the lever 15a being connected at its end to rod 17. At the other end lever 15a a second lever 15b is pivoted at its centre and has rods 18, 19 connected to its ends. This arrangement gives four positions of the batten. In Fig. 2 is shown the gear system for controlling the movement of levers 20 from the jacquard. Levers 20 are controlled by movement of levers 20a. An arm 33 is oscillated by an eccentric 31 and carries a knife edge 36 which can engage a hook on lever 37 which is moved by the jacquard. Movement of lever 37 carries a roller 37 on lever 38 to move an arm 26 which carries cam surfaces which cause mutilated gear 23 to move axially on its shaft 22 and engage a second mutilated gear 28 which drives a crank arm 30.
