Abstract
1,215,250. Check digits. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 23 Dec., 1968 [23 Dec., 1967], No. 61019/68. Heading G4A. A check digit P is calculated from the formula wherein the weighting Gi of each digit Zi increases according to its decimal order. A test on the number brings a counter operating modulo M to zero, for correct operation. Successive digits each increased by M starting with the highest are fed at 3 to counter 1 and via switch 7 to counter 2. A carry pulse from 1 operates bi-stable 5 to open AND gate 6 so that as Z 1 is fed into counter 1 twice that number is fed into counter 2 due to both the leading and trailing edges of pulses 3 affecting OR gate 8. After m cycles counter 1 registers (Z 1 + Z 2 + . . . + Zm) mod M, and counter 2 ((m + 1)Z 1 + mZ 2 + . . . 2Zm) mod M. The latter is equal to M-P, so giving the check digit P. After recording or transmission the number is checked by repeating the process on the complete number with the switch 7 open. Counting in counter 2 begins now only when carry from counter 1 takes place but the registration modulo M is the same, and with the addition of P comes to zero if transmission has been correct.
