Abstract
1,213,506. Winding up a plurality of strands. JOHNS-MANVILLE CORP. 17 Sept., 1968, No. 44105/68. Headings DID and D1J. To wind a plurality of strands in spacedapart relation upon a common winding mandrel 52, a plurality of continuous filaments 12 are first gathered into a primary strand 14A, by means of a gathering body 16A, and this strand is then wound onto the mandrel 52. Thereafter the gathering body 16A is moved to a non-operative setting and a wheel 46, defining a plurality of grooves 48, is moved to a setting in which the grooves 48 divide the primary strand 14A into a plurality of secondary strands. A comb 64, adjacent the wheel 46, is moved to a setting in which its teeth project between said secondary strands and it is then moved down a slide rod 69 to a setting close to strand traversing means 54A adjacent the winding mandrel 52. The comb 64 thus serves to maintain the secondary strands in spaced-apart relation as they are wound up. In a modified oonstruction the comb 64 is absent and it is the grooved wheel 46 that is moved down the slide 68 to setting adjacent the traverse means 54A to maintain the secondary yarns in spaced-apart relationship.
