Abstract

1,212,783. 783. Photographic silver halide material. ILFORD Ltd. June 6, 1969 [June 12, 1968], No.27947/68. Heading G2C. [Also in Division C2] A photographic material comprises a support having coated on one side thereon, in order, a gelatine layer which is partially cross-linked by the presence therein of disulphide linkages and an unhardened gelatino silver halide emulsion layer. An inert pigment e.g. carbon black is preferably present in the partially cross-linked gelatine layer. The said photographic material may be prepared by coating a layer of thiolated gelatine on a support and subjecting the layer to aerial oxidation to affect cross-linking of thiol groups to form disulphide linkages, and thereafter coating a layer of a gelatino silver halide emulsion thereon, or by treating an aqueous gelatine solution with a gelatinecrosslinking agent of the formula R-S-S-R<SP>1</SP> where R and R<SP>1</SP> are each groups capable of reacting with gelatine so as to cross-link the gelatine and coating the mixture on a support thereby to affect partial cross-linking of the gelatine layer by the formation therein of disulphide linkages, and thereafter coating a layer of a gelatino silver halide emulsion thereon. When the photographic material of the present invention after exposure is treated with an aqueous alkaline solution of a mercaptan compound for a predetermined period of time a selective decross-linking reaction of the gelatine occurs and the gelatine may easily be removed by washing. Negative or direct positive photographic records may be obtained. If the exposed material is kept in the presence of the mercaptan compound either during or after development for a relatively short time a negative image is obtained; a longer period of time in a mercaptan compound which is also a silver halide solvent a direct positive image is obtained; but if the material is kept in the presence of a mercaptan compound for too long no image at all is obtained as all the gelatine becomes de-crosslinked and removed during the washing step. A negative image may also be obtained by developing the exposed material in a non-tanning silver halide developing solution, removing the undeveloped silver halide by fixing it out, bleaching the developed silver to silver halide, treating the material with an aqueous alkaline solution of a mercaptan compound and washing the material in water thereby to remove the silver halide emulsion from the material and the gelatine from the unexposed areas of the material. The mercaptan compound may be cysteine, cysteine hydrochloride, thiomalic acid (mercapto-succinic acid), N-acetyl-homocysteinethiolactone, 2 -mercaptoethylamine hydrochloride, 2-mercaptoethanol or 1-thioglycerol.
