Abstract

1,206,728. Controlling reactors. SOC. ANGLO-BELGE VULCAIN S.A. 29 Aug., 1968 [7 Sept., 1967], No. 41286/68. Heading G6C. In a nuclear reactor, control is effected by varying both the heavy water-light water composition of the moderator-coolant and the control rod position, in correspondence with the moderator temperature. A desired control temperature is computed which is independent of both Doppler and void effects but which takes into account the xenon effect, fuel burnup and fission product build-up. The xenon effect is compensated by the neutron absorber control rod displacement while the fuel burn-up and fission product build-up is controlled by automatic light water injection. The light water is added only when the absorber rods are withdrawn. Measurement of the coolant temperature is effected by thermocouples or electrical resistance thermometers, at the reactor core inlet and outlet, the output signals from which are applied to a circuit arranged to provide a control signal as a function of the reactor powercoolant temperature characteristic.
