Abstract
1,201,664. 664. Holography. COMPAGNIE GENERALE D'ELECTRICITE. Jan.26, 1968 [Jan.26, 1967], No.4183/68. Heading G2J. Deformation or movement of an object, such as a dam, with time, is determined by making a hologram, from a fixed point, of the object and a fixed reference mark, and at a later time making a second hologram of the object and the fixed reference mark and comparing the two holograms. The fixed reference mark allows account to be taken of variations in the frequency of the laser used for making and reconstructing the holograms or variations due to distortion of the gelatine in the holograms. The reconstruction may be on a different scale from that of the original and observations made by a lens system such as a microscope or telescope. For rapid evaluation of approximate movement, a series of holograms may be made initially of the object and the fixed reference mark with the latter in a series of adjacent positions e.g. separated by one millimetre steps, and the hologram made at the later time is compared with each in turn of the initial holograms to determine to which one it approximates.
