Abstract

1,201,340. Cooling rotors. LICENTIA PATENT-VERWALTUNGSG.m.b.H. 20 Dec., 1967 [28 Dec., 1966], No. 57896/67. Heading H2A. A rotor for a turbo-generator has a liquid cooled winding employing hollow conductors where the coolant supply to the centre of each end winding connection is provided by a tube which runs from an admission chamber along the rotor shaft towards the core and bends through 180 degrees to run in the reverse axial direction spaced from the shaft and under the winding overhang and is shaped to meet the connection point with the winding as a circumferential arc. The exhaust connection to a collecting chamber at the other end of the rotor is similarly formed. Coolant flows into arcuate admission chambers 10, (13) from bore 47 at the exciter end of the rotor shaft. Connected to chambers 10, (13) is a plurality of tubes 21 which lie in axial slots 23 and are bent back on themselves at 27 to lie in the surface of a cylinder 28 before being bent to connect with coil ends 51 at 31, Fig. 5. The tube 21 may be in one piece with resilience provided by bend 27 and the bend adjacent the coil ends, but additionally a flexible connection 20 may be provided. On entry to coil end 51 the coolant flow divides to pass along the coil conductors until it recombines at the turbine end of the machine and enters annular collection chamber 33 which is connected to the coils by a similar arrangement of tubes. Liquid in chamber 33 is returned along pipes 35 which are bent to lie in pole face slots 39 of the rotor before entering return chambers 15 which are situated in the diametral pole plane between the admission chambers. Liquid is withdrawn through bore 17 in the shaft. At the exciter end of the machine the return pipe 40 is carried in a deep slot under the slip ring lead 41.
