Abstract

1,199,483. Acetylene. MONTECATINI EDISON S.p.A. 21 July, 1967 [22 July, 1966], No. 33739/67. Heading C5E. [Also in Division B2] The inner surface of a metal hydrocarbon cracking reactor is coated by spraying molten alumina (alpha form), zirconia stabilized with lime, magnesia or yttrium oxide, magnesia, thoria, a composite metal oxide or a mixture thereof, the sprayed materials having ceramic characteristics and melting-point > 1900‹ C. (see Division B2). The surface to be protected may be part of the inner surface of a reactor for the production of acetylene by a partial combustion process, e.g. the burner, combustion chamber or injection nozzle. In an example a protective coating of ceramic character is applied to the stainless steel burner and the combustion chamber of a hydrocarbon cracking reactor. The surfaces to be coated are first degreased, sanded and a connecting coating deposited. The connecting coating consists of two superimposed layers, the first layer containing chromium, nickel, iron, silicon, boron and carbon and the second layer chromium and nickel. A protective ceramic coating is then applied on to the connecting layer by the application of zirconium oxide stabilized with calcium oxide. The deposition of both the connecting layer and of the protective ceramic coating is carried out by spraying in the molten state with ejection of the materials to be applied into a plasma flame jet arc. The coating is said to extend the life of the reactor and increase its efficiency.
