Abstract

1,198,936. Grinding teeth of card flats while in operative position. ASHWORTH BROS. Inc. 21 June, 1968 [27 June, 1967; 5 March, 1968], No. 29736/68. Heading B3D. The teeth of card flats 10 are ground while the card flats are in their operative position on the carding machine 8 by a grinding head 20 having a plurality of abrasive surfaced, rotating discs which are located between adjacent rows of teeth on the flats, the head 20 being reciprocated across the flats transversely of their direction of movement. The card flats 10 are arranged in spaced parallel relationship and the rows of teeth 18 are arrayed parallel to the direction of movement of the flats. The relative speeds of the flats and the reciprocational movement of the grinding head are such as to ensure that the discs pass from one row to another row only in the open spaces between the teeth on adjacent flats. The card flats can be driven from the drive of the carding machine but can also be driven independently at a faster speed for quicker grinding when no carding is taking place. The means for reciprocating the grinding head consists of a rotatably mounted hollow drum 24 with a cross-threaded screw-shaft 26 rotatably mounted therein. The head slides on the drum due to the drum and shaft rotating at different speeds through a transmission gear means 34 and a follower on the head engaging the screw-shaft.
