Abstract

1,198,565. Fuel elements. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 6 May, 1968 [18 May, 1967], No. 21275/68. Heading G6C. [Also in Division B3] In forming a sealed enclosure, e.g. a nuclear fuel element by welding at least one end-cap to a tube, the peripheral surface of the end-cap is formed with a large number of small grooves which when the end cap is inserted in the tube maintains communication between the exterior and interior of the tube, the assembly is positioned in a chamber containing an atmosphere, e.g. a vacuum or inert gas, different from the free atmosphere and the end cap is welded to the tube in such manner as to close the ducts. Grooves may also be formed in the surface of the tube adjacent the end-cap. An annular tapered end-cap 14 is forced between the concentric walls 8, 10 of a fuel element, the walls being of a magnesiumzirconium alloy. Inclined or axial grooves 26 are provided on the inner and outer surfaces of the end-cap, e.g. by milling. Welding is effected by an electron or laser beam in a vacuum chamber. The welding proceeds in a direction such that the inner ends of inclined grooves are sealed first. If an inert gas is to be contained in the fuel element, the welding chamber contains an inert gas, e.g. argon, and gas shielded arc-welding is effected with or without a consumable electrode. After welding, the walls are pressed into grooves 12. Annular or solid end-caps of circular, rectangular and star-shape may be used to seal correspondingly shaped tubes. A refractory insulator 20, of say magnesium oxide, having a grooved periphery may be located adjacent the end-cap.
