Abstract

1,198,306. Electrostatic printing. RANK XEROX Ltd. 17 Nov., 1967 [21 Nov., 1966], No. 62322/67. Heading B6C. [Also in Divisions G2-3] A method of xerographic duplicating comprises forming an electrostatic latent image of an original on a photo-conductive surface, developing the image, transferring the developed image by heat and pressure to a support and thereafter successively redeveloping the latent image and transferring the developed image to further supports. As shown, a latent image, formed on a drum 19 by charging and exposure in known manner, is cascade developed with two-component developer material 42. A web 50 is advanced over a heating unit 54 and pressure roller 56, such that toner particles in contact with the heated web tackify and adhere to the web. The toner cools and becomes fixed before being rewound. The charging and exposure stations are rendered inoperative, such that during duplicating only development and transfer takes place. The motor 24 driving the drum 19 may run at a higher speed during duplicating. When the required number of copies have been produced the drum is cleaned at station 65 and discharged by illumination from a lamp 81 before recharging and exposure to a further original. The heating unit 54, Fig. 5, has an infra-red lamp 107 within housing 101. Pressure roller 56 is mounted in a frame 132 pivoted on a shaft 134. The roller has a resilient layer 136, e.g. a 40 Durameter siliconized rubber on a metal core, e.g. of aluminium. A spring 140, tensioned by a screw 146, urges the roller 56 against the drum surface 19. Alignment rollers 160 mounted on members 16 adjustable by screws 170 ensure proper contact of the pressure roller with the drum surface. A manually actuated cam-shaft 185 carries a cam (186), Fig. 3 (not shown), which restrains pressure roller 56, Fig. 5, against pivotal movement about shaft 134 when the drum 19 is removed. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), roller (56) houses a heating lamp (107).
