Abstract

1,198,111. Defibrillators. FRITZ HELLIGE & CO. G.m.b.H. 27 July, 1967 [28 July, 1968], .No. 34560/167. Heading A5R. [Also in Division H3] A defibrillator for applying a direct current pulse to the heart through internal or external electrodes 29a, 29b comprises a charge storage circuit including at least one storage capacitor Cl, C2 and a controller monitoring the charging of the capacitor and arranged to actuate a shock-releasing switch in the output circuit of the capacitor. As shown, the storage capacitors C1, C2 are charged from an A.C. supply 32 through the master switch contacts 2a, 2b, an adjustable transformer 30 (or potentiometer), and rectifiers D1 D2, and the capacitors are arranged to discharge to the electrodes. 29a, 29b through a controller circuit R1, R2, 23, 25 limiting the voltage across the capacitors, and a relay operated isolation, switch 27a, 27b able to separate the capacitors from the electrodes. The defibrillator circuit is arranged such that pressing the master switch 2 allows the capacitors C1 C2 to charge (with the switch 27a, 27b open) until a glow discharge tube 25 triggers to cause a photo-electric device 11 and amplifier 8 to move switch contacts 4a, 4b with a relay 7a, the A.C. supply then being switched by the contacts 4a, 4b, to leads 5, an da relay 12 to close the isolation switch contacts 27a, 27b and allow the capacitors change to be delivered to the patient. The transformer control 31 and the control 34 on the adjustable resistor in the controller circuit can be moved, preferably (by a common control 'knob 35a, so as to adjust the voltage of the deflibrillating pulse. The defibrillator circuit also includes resistors 39, 40 arranged to shortcircuit the charge on the capacitors C1 C2 if the defibrillating pulse is, for some reason, not delivered, and an optional circuit (introduced by a switch 13) able, through a switch 15c and a relay 15b, to synchronize the defilbrillation pulse to the R-wave signal derived from the patients heart via an electrocardiograph 15a, 15.
