Abstract

1,196,886. Printing plates. COLUMBIA RIBBON & CARBON MFG. CO. Inc. 18 March, 1969 [29 Jan., 1969], No. 14083/69. Heading B6C. A planographic printing plate comprises a flexible foundation, which may be a plastics material film and may have on it water-barrier and/or hydrophilic layers, and on the foundation a layer of a composition comprising: (a) Polyvinyl alcohol. (b) A polyfunctional hardener, which makes the polyvinyl alcohol insoluble. (c) Colloidal silica, clay and zinc oxide each present in a weight proportion in excess of that of the polyvinyl alcohol. (d) Water. The weight proportion of the zinc oxide present being less than 52% of the weight of the clay present. Preferably the hardener is present in a weight of 0.1 to 1À2 times that of the polyvinyl alcohol, and the ratio of clay to polyvinyl alcohol may be 3 : 1 to 10 : 1. The ratio of zinc oxide to polyvinyl alcohol may be 1 : 1 to 5 : 1.
