Abstract
1,196,805. Casting processes; continuous casting. H. J. DAUSSAN. 2 Oct., 1967 [3 Oct., 1966], No. 44677/67. Heading B3F. Molten metal M in a mould A, which may be an ingot mould or a continuous casting mould, is fed with a liquid Ar, Co 2 or particulate material through a tube 1 to impart a gyratory movement to the metal. The tube may be immersed in the metal; it may be in the form of a coil so that its end is eccentric to the axis X-X of the mould and the molten metal jet D and is at a downardly directed angle. The tube may either be consumable by the molten metal M so that its end remains near the free surface of the molten metal as it rises in the mould, or the tube may be heat resistant and the free end is gradually raised by a winder 7 by means of a link 8 attached by a collar 9 to the end of the tube to brush or be spaced from the metal. The particulate material may be inert or reactive with the molten metal, e.g. ferrous metal, or an oxidizing agent such as ferrous oxide or manganese dioxide; or a reducing agent such as aluminium, silicon or their alloys. If a consumable tube 1 is used it may be made of a combustible cellulosic material or of a metal that alloys with the cast metal e.g. carbon steel, aluminium, copper, zinc or silicon. The mould may have an insulating and/or exothermic lining E at its top. A continuous casting mould (A 1 ), (Fig. 3, not shown) has a removable starter base (B 1 ) that includes a seal (11) and a tube that is not immersed in the metal.
