Abstract

1,192,477. Metallized fabrics. LA CELLOPHANE. 17 June, 1968 [8 Aug., 1967], No. 28785/68. Heading B5N. Metallized fabrics are produced by depositing a layer of a non-adherent varnish on a smooth flexible sheet of a temporary support, depositing under vacuum a layer of metal, e.g. aluminium, on the varnish, coating a layer of adhesive of neutral pH on the metal layer, drying the adhesive, bringing the coated face of the temporary support into contact with the fabric and applying heat and pressure to the resulting assembly so that the metal coating is adhered to the fabric, and stripping off the support to leave the metal and varnish layers adhered to the fabric. The fabric may be woven, tricot or non-woven fabric or felt made from cellulose acetate or nylon and the temporary support may be a film of regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate or butyrate, polyvinyl chloride, a polyester, a polyamide or rubber or paper impregnated with plastic material. The varnish may be a cross-linkable acrylic compound derivative dissolved in an organic solvent, e.g. methyl isobutylketone or methyl ethyl ketone to which ethyl acetate is added and may also contain dyes or pigments. The adhesive, which may be an aqueous emulsion of an acrylic or vinyl compound or copolymer thereof, e.g. an emulsion containing a copolymer of acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride and/or vinyl acetate, or an elastomer is adjusted to a neutral pH by for example the addition of ammonia or acetic acid and may also contain zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. The support bearing successive layers of varnish, metal and dried adhesive may be reeled up and kept for later application to the fabric or passed directly to a machine where it is applied to the fabric with heat and pressure, e.g. using a calender machine heated to 90-100‹ C. or in a press the plates of which are heated to 120‹ C. The assembly may then be cooled by passage over a cooling cylinder and the support stripped off. Patterned effects may be produced by applying the adhesive locally in areas to form a decorative pattern.
