Abstract

1,190,231. Air filter. GENERAL MOTORS Ltd. 22 Feb., 1968 [23 Feb., 1967], No. 8620/67. Heading B1T. An air filter for an I.C. engine intake has a two-part housing 1, 2, made of plastics and secured together by screws 21 and bolt 7, whose shanks are enclosed by sleeves 23, 11, or formed with shoulders, which limit the extent to which they are tightened, and between whose heads and the upper housing part are compressed rubber washers 25, 10, which expand to take up any progressive deformation (creep) of the housing parts, to maintain the outer edges 19, 20 in sealing contact and to maintain a seal between filter element 14 and respective seats on the housing parts. The element 14 is pleated and made of resinimpregnated paper. In Fig. 1, radial fins 16 with axial, reinforcing corrugations (17), integral with part 1, engage lower housing part 2 above where outlet 4 is clamped against intake spigot 5 of the carburetter. In Fig. 3 (not shown), fins 16 are replaced by a perforated metal spacer, which may be tapered (27) or cylindrical (37). Screws 21 may be replaced by nuts engaging threaded pins, integral with one housing part, or by bead and socket fastenings.
