Abstract

1,186,738. Self-levelling spreaders for lifting loads. GENERAL ELECTRIC & ENGLISH ELECTRIC COMPANIES Ltd. 5 Feb., 1969 [6 Nov., 1967], No. 60370/67. Heading BBH. A self-levelling lifting spreader comprises a beam 13, Fig. 1, supported from a crane hook 8 by cables 5, 6 and runners 3, 4 which are held apart by hydraulic rams 9, 11 and 10, 12. The cylinders 11, 12 of the rams are connected through valves V1, V2, to an hydraulic accumulator H. If the centre of gravity of the load L is offset as at W, the higher pressure in the cylinder 11 as the load is raised opens the valve V2 and allows fluid to pass from the cylinder 12 to the accumulator until the pressure in the two cylinders is equalized. As this occurs the runner 4 moves inwards until the point W is vertically below the hook 8. Figs. 3, 5 and 6 show embodiments with two, three and four rams respectively, the mode of operation being similar in each case.
