Abstract

1,185,587. Laying wire. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. 23 Oct., 1968, No. 50375/68. Heading B3A. [Also in Division H3] Wire is layed between points on a substrate, which may be a "waffle iron" ferrite storage plate or support electronic components or circuitry, by imparting relative movement in at least one direction in a plane between the substrate 3, Fig. 1A, and a hollow stylus 2 through which the wire 34 is fed by driven rollers 33, 41, the wire being anchored on or adjacent the substrate at its free end and having its tension where it enters the stylus controlled by regulating the rate at which the wire is fed in relation to the rate of relative movement between the stylus and the substrate. The stylus forms part of a balanced head 5 which is suspended by two flexure springs 10, 11 from a support 1 for movement in a single vertical plane. The stylus is raised in the vertical direction whenever an armature 23 is attracted by energizing an electromagnet 14. The support carries an electric drive motor 36 for the rollers 33, 41, and is itself pivotally mounted on a support arm 24 so as to enable coarse adjustment of the stylus position to be made by moving adjusting screw 26. Two forms of stylus are described, Figs 4 and 5 (not shown), each having a radiused inner surface at the end 43 adjacent the substrate, one form having a conical bore which reduces in the direction of wire movement while the other comprises an apertured dish-shaped shoe. As applied to a substrate consisting of a waffle iron storage plate, the substrate is itself attached to an insulating base 4 supporting terminal posts aligned with the plate grooves, Fig. 3 (not shown). Wiring is effected by securing the free wire end to a terminal post and moving the substrate in directions such as to lay the wire in the required wiring pattern in the grooves and between the posts, the electromagnet being energized each time the stylus is to be raised from the base on to the surface of the substrate and vice versa. A plurality of wire feeds and styli may be used.
