Abstract

[Also in Division H1] Variable voltage control of a D.C. motor 103 is provided by means of a tap-changing system associated with a three-phase auto-transformer 100 and incorporating transductors T A , T B , T c , a compensating resistor R being placed into or cut out of circuit as the transductors in a saturated condition are switched (simultaneously) out of and into circuit during tapchanging. An auxiliary circuit comprising a tapped transformer 107 and rectifier 110 ensure that a minimum current is supplied to the control windings of the transductors to prevent the load voltage obtained from any tap falling below the maximum voltage obtainable from the next lower tap. Also the low-voltage limit of armature is set by a suitable choice of the tapping voltage of 107 and of the circuit impedance of the auxiliary circuit.
