Abstract

1,182,421. Porous resistor heaters. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 28 Feb., 1967 [30 Nov., 1965], No. 50876/65. Heading H5H. A fluid heater comprises a porous self-supporting hollow cylindrical resistor body 1 electrically energized through terminals 2 and inlet and outlet ducts 6, 4, the inner and outer cylindrical surfaces being exposed respectively for entry of fluid and exit of heated fluid, the exposed parts of the sides together constituting a major fraction of the body surface area. A liquid, e.g. water, may be converted to vapour by flowing through body 1. The heater may comprise concentric bodies (40, 41, Fig. 4) insulated by a gas gap (42), one for vaporizing and one for superheating, and a porous electrically insulating alumina tube or coating (43) may be heated by conduction from the heater and may preheat. The heater may comprise disc bodies (50, Fig. 5) in a duct (51). The resistor body comprises carbon or sintered metal. To obtain uniform flow, the porosity of the alumina layer (43) may vary lengthwise, or a powder may be suspended in the liquid to build up on the resistor surface. A catalyst for the liquid may be provided in the resistor body material or coated thereon.
