Abstract
1,180,884. Urea-formaldehyde reaction products. ALLIED CHEMICAL CORP. 30 May, 1968 [6 June, 1967], No. 25953/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C1] Liquid fertilizer suspensions containing ureaform having a pH of 5À8, a mol. ratio of urea to formaldehyde of 1 : 1 to 2 : 1, a water-insoluble nitrogen content of at least 4%, and an activity index in excess of 40, may be obtained by a process comprising the steps of (a) diluting with water to a concentration of 35-65% by wt. a non-resinous urea-formaldehyde reaction product formed by heating urea and formaldehyde in mol. ratios of 1 : 1 to 2 : 1 in the presence of ammonia, (b) adding an acidic material to the resulting mixture to reduce the pH to less than 5, (c) heating the mixture at 30-80‹ C. until its water-insoluble nitrogen amounts to 4-10%, and (d) adding an alkaline reacting material to said product so as to raise the pH above 5 to produce a urea-form suspension. The acidic material may be an acid, a hydrolysable ester or an acidreacting salt, and the alkaline-reacting material may be an inorganic base or alkaline-reacting salt thereof. The pH of the starting material is suitably above 7 and substantially all the formaldehyde contained therein is preferably in combined form.
