Abstract

1,172,378. Lasers. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 23 Dec., 1966 [29 Dec., 1965], No. 57832/66. Heading H1C. In a laser in which a crystal active medium 18 and a pumping source 12 are located at respective foci of a reflecting enclosure 14 of elliptical cross-section, the pumping source comprises a high-pressure arc 16 produced within a trans. parent, e.g. quartz, envelope 24 between a tubular anode 22 and a cathode 20, the arc being stabilized and constricted into a lineal path by a swirling flow pattern of arc gas which is circulated under pressure between inlets 30 and an exit passage 28 in the anode. The arc may be started by a high-frequency discharge. The anode and cathode are water-cooled and are respectively formed of tungsten with or without thorium content, and copper preferably having a tungsten tip. An alternative anode material is a copper-silver alloy. Suitable arc gases are argon, xenon and krypton. The laser crystal may be either ruby or neodymium-doped yttrium aluminium garnet which is housed in a transparent, e.g. quartz, envelope through which water or other fluid coolant is circulated. The output of the laser is continuous and is concentrated on a workpiece X by a lens 44. To prevent deterioration of the quartz envelope 24, a gas such as argon or air is circulated under pressure through the enclosure 14 between inlet 32 and outlet 34. Additionally or alternatively the pumping source may be fluid-cooled by water or other radiation-transmitting liquid circulated between the envelope 24 and an outer transparent sleeve (not shown). Use of a tubular cathode with arc gas introduced at both ends of the arc cavity 26 is suggested.
