The invention relates to apparatus for depositing lumps of dough, conveyed on a feed belt 2, on a conveyer belt 14 by means of a delivery roller 10 provided at the delivery position opposite and spaced from the return roller 8 of the feed belt and driven at the same speed as, but in the opposite direction to the direction of movement of, the feed belt. According to the invention, the delivery roller 10 is driven independently of the belt 2 and comprises first segments 10b, 10d, rigid with the driving shaft 10e and second, freely rotatable segments 10a, 10c mounted on the driving shaft 10e, a brake 13 braking the segments 10a, 10c relatively to the driving shaft 10e and the feed belt 2. The feed belt 2 may be driven intermittently in accordance with the intervals between the rows 3, 4, 5 of lumps of dough conveyed, the delivery roller 10 rotating either continuously or during the intervals between the working strokes of the feed belt 2. The brake comprises a spring, bearing upon the surfaces of the rotatable segments 10a, 10c. Thus in operation, the feed belt 2 stops when a row is present at the transfer position as in Fig. 2. The lumps 5b and 5d continue to be transferred by the action of the rollers 10b, 10d while the lumps 5a and 5c are not transferred until the belt 2 recommences movement. The lumps are thus fed to the belt 14 in the pattern shown in Fig. 4. The rate and direction of the belt 14 may be varied. The rollers may be arranged rigid and free on the drive shaft 10e in any desired arrangement (i.e. other than alternately as shown).
