Abstract

1,169,842. Rolling threads. RUSSELL, BURDSALL & WARD BOLT & NUT CO. 9 April, 1968 [14 April, 1967], No. 17103/68. Heading B3M. [Also in Division F2] Thread rolling dies for forming a locking screw from a blank 20a comprise a stationary die 50 and a movable die 51. Milled grooves for forming the thread are provided on the faces of the dies and an insert 56 is fitted into a slot 55 in the die 51. The insert 56 has grooves 54a which are slightly offset with respect to the grooves on the face 57 of the die. A thread is therefore formed, some of the turns of which have offset segments which act as locking turns when the screw is inserted in a nut. A recess 62 is cut in the die 50 and the insert 56 is provided with a cut-away portion 58 to prevent disturbance of the locking segments when completing the thread rolling operation.
