Abstract
1,166,823. Transformer. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 4 Oct., 1966 [6 Oct., 1965], No. 42379/65. Heading H1T. To reduce damage caused by surge voltages, single-layer cylindrical winding 40 is connected in series with main high voltage winding 33, and comprises two similar, insulated conductor members wound together, one comprising turns 1 to 8 and the other turns 9 to 16. Turns 8 and 9 are connected and the connection is tapped. Two windings 40 may be employed. Further tapping points 41 and 44 are provided at the ends of the or each winding 40, and a tapchanger may be employed to vary the output voltage of the transformer. In normal operation current flow is through consecutivelynumbered turns, and the ampere-turns produced are additive. Interleaving of the conductors prevents damage under surge or impulse conditions by providing a substantially non-inductive capacitative pack for the resulting transient current. The winding may be made up with two paths in parallel and a total of four conductors wound together, or be made up of conductors so connected that tapping connections may be taken from its centre or from points distributed along its length. Windings interleaved in this way may be used as tapping windings for reactors, or be complete transformer or reactor windings, and may be associated with tapchangers of any suitable construction.
