A card c, Fig. 3, is vertically aligned with material, e.g. bacon slices, on a conveyer above and is fed from beneath the conveyer by a driven feed roll 75, situated below and across the discharge end of the conveyer, so that material is deposited on the card. The end cards in a magazine 33, Fig. 6, are bowed outwardly by air jets N so that a suction cup 39 on a reciprocating arm 38 removes only one card at a time. The arm 38 pivots downwardly about axis 50<SP>1</SP> to the chain dotted position 54, Fig. 5, a stop 65 bowing the card. The arm 38 has a projecting cam surface 46 which engages an adjustable stop 41 to pivot the arm in a plane at right angles to that of its downward direction to push the card laterally between feed rolls 55, 56 which feed it on to a support 67. A photo-electric device 79-81, see also Fig. 1 (not shown), detects the slices on the endless conveyer 12 to actuate a timer (83), Fig. 9 (not shown). After a time lag, a pusher 71 moves the card between feed rolls 75, 76 and on to a conveyer 14 below the bacon slices which fall off the conveyer 12. If the timer is actuated for a short period e.g. a bacon scrap is detected a reset timer (83<SP>1</SP>), Fig. 9, resets the timer (83) for the next batch of bacon slices.
