Abstract

1,161,184. Hair curling; self-winding roller. A. COMPERE. 16 Jan., 1968 [17 May, 1967], No. 2278/68. Heading A4V. A hair curler which automatically winds a lock of hair upon a spring-driven rotating roller on release of a manually operated clutch, comprises a hollow drum 1 rotatably mounted on a spindle consisting of telescopically engaged inner and outer members 4 and 5, that are urged apart by a compression spring 13. The spindle members are preferably non-rotatable relative to each other and have end portions 7 and 14 projecting through cylindrical apertures in end caps 2 and 3, these end caps being rigidly secured to the drum. The spindle end portion 14 has a ridged frusto-conical clutch surface 15 engaging with a corresponding ridged inner face of the aperture in end cap 3. A coiled torsion spring 18 surrounding the spindle, has its one end attached thereto at a point adjacent to the clutch head, and its other end 18<SP>1</SP> secured to the inside of the drum at 1<SP>1</SP>. A hair clamping jaw 21, fitting into a corresponding recess 20 in the outer face of the drum, is hinged to the drum at 22 and has a fastening stud 27 which enters an aperture 28 to engage with a clasp 29 on the inner face of the drum. Along its opening edge the jaw has a strip of resilient friction material which mates with grooves 26 when the jaw is closed. An L-shaped rod 8 is non-rotatably secured by its shorter arm in the spindle end portion 7, with its longer arm extended over and along the drum. In use, the torsion spring 16 is initially stressed, a lock of hair is inserted under rod 8 and clamped against the drum face by closing on it the jaw 21. The spindle ends 7 and 14 are then manually pressed towards each other against the action of the compression spring 13, whereupon the cooperating clutch faces at 15 are disengaged and the stressed torsion spring rotates the drum and winds the hair-lock thereon. The hair is removed by again disengaging the clutch and pulling on the hair curler, when the hair unwinds and re-stresses the torsion spring for another curling operation. Several alternative types of hair locking jaw are described; also the coiled form of torsion spring may be replaced by a helical clockwork type spring.
