Abstract

1,161,064. Rolling. UNITED ENG. & FOUNDRY CO. 16 Jan., 1967 [14 Jan., 1966], No. 1971/66. Heading B3M. A rolling mill comprises vertical rolls 16, 17 mounted in chocks 18 with screw adjusting means 19 and drive means for each roll which is pivotally mounted on the mill housing with the pivotal axes 32 displaced from the vertical plane through the rolls. Each roll has a vertical spindle 24, 25 keyed to it with a toothed end 26 which meshes with the sleeve extension 27 of a gear 28. The gear 28 engages a pinion 41 which is connected through mitre gears 44, 45 to a common drive shaft 46. The gear 28 and pinion for each roll are mounted in a housing 31 which is pivoted about the axis 32 so that when the roll gap is adjusted the housings 31 are moved simultaneously by screws 34 connected to the screws 19 by shafts 36. Cylinder assemblies 23, 40 are provided to urge the chocks 18 and the housings 31 against the screws 19, 34 respectively. The rolls 16, 17 can be removed from the mill by moving the housing 31 to their innermost position and disconnecting the spindles 24, 25 from the rolls.
