Abstract
1,159,659. Surgical prosthesis. DOW CORNING CORP. 15 March, 1967 [23 June, 1966], No. 12141/67. Heading A5R [Also in Divisions B2 and C3] Medical and dental devices and tissue implants for use in contact with blood have on the surface carboxyl groups which render the surface of the device anti-coaguative when in contact with blood. The surfaces may be carboxylated by grafting unsaturated acids such as acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic acid through free radical initiation, e.g. with ionising radiation with cobalt 60 or a peroxide catalyst. Alternatively carboxylation may be accomplished by a surface treatment of the article with a polymeric material which contains the required carboxyl groups such as polyacrylic acid or a carboxylated organo silicone compounds such as The device which is to be coated may be of organic rubber, stainless steel, plastics or glass. Suitable plastics are specified and the implant may comprise, for example, a heart valve, blood vessel, encapsulant for an electronic device, or a sponge implant material.
