Abstract

1,156,712. Air supply controls for rail vehicle pipe couplings. GERMANY, MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT. 1 Sept., 1966, No. 39104/66. Heading B7T. A rail vehicle air control system for controlling the supply of compressed air to a line coupling 1 in which a main air line 2 and a main air tank line 3 terminate, comprises a control rod 5 axially movable in a switch valve 4 in the coupling head by contact between the member 5 and the counter coupling head (not shown) on coupling of the heads, to supply air from the main air line 2 via a non-return valve 10 and conduits 11 and 12, a control valve 13, and a conduit 28 to an operating piston and cylinder 31, 29, which rotates, via a control lever 33, a shaft 49 of a main valve 34 in the line 2 to open the valve 34, the air pressure in chambers 18, 19 of the control valve 13 then increasing as the piston 31 stops, and further lifting a spring- loaded piston 24 from its seat 26 and thereby allowing a spring-loaded valve disc 14 to seal against a seat 16, so that the cylinder 29 is vented to atmosphere through the orifice 22, a branch conduit 39 being supplied via conduit 12 from the switch valve 4, and connected via a valve 50 operable by the common shaft 49, to a pneumatic valve 40 in the tank line 3. The control system may be rendered inoperative by manually moving the control lever 33 into engagement with a pawl 36 (as shown), thus closing the valves 34, 40 and venting the cylinder 29, and the valve 40. When the heads are uncoupled, the member 5 is displaced by air pressure in the conduits 11, 12 to close the valve 40. In another embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the switch valve is rigidly connected to the line coupling and the valve 50 is omitted. The system is rendered inoperative by moving the line coupling rearwardly by the mechanism 1a so that the rod 5 moves forwardly which moves the piston 6 to shut off the conduit 11, and vent the valve 40 via an opening 8 and close the valve 40.
