Abstract

1,152,208. Dehydrofluorinating a fluorohydrocarbon elastomer. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 3 Nov., 1966 [3 Aug., 1965; 30 Nov., 1965], Nos. 42991/68 and 42992/68. Divided out of 1,144,163. Heading C3P. A fluorohydrocarbon elastomer is dehydrofluorinated by dissolving it in an alkyl substituted amide solvent where the elastomer reacts with the solvent and undergoes a process of dehydrofluorination and then removing the solvent. Preferred amides are dimethyl-formamide and dimethylacetamide. The solvent may be refluxed. A salt may be dissolved in the solvent, the salt being an alkali metal or ammonium cyanide or thiocyanate or an alkaline earth metal nitrate, e.g. sodium cyanide or sodium thiocyanate. The preferred elastomer is a copolymer of hexafluoropropylene and vinylidene fluoride. The dehydrofluorinated polymer may be cured by heating with a curing agent, e.g. hexamethylene diamine, divinyl benzene or triallyl cyanurate. The dehydrofluorinated elastomer may be compounded with a polymer e.g. a fluorosilicone, and the compounded product cured. In the example are also used: magnesium oxide, carbon black, ethyl vinyl benzene, dicumyl peroxide and a copper inhibitor: disalicylol propylene diamine.
