Abstract

1,152,093. Pipe couplings. H. K. PORTER CO. (GREAT BRITAIN) Ltd. 29 Feb., 1968 [24 Jan., 1967], No. 3434/67. Heading F2G. A coupling for connecting hydraulic or pneumatic lines comprises parts 5, 20 having spring- urged valves 15, 27, in the bores thereof and interconnectible by screw-threads, the valves being open or closed when the parts are respectively coupled or uncoupled, and there are locking means for maintaining the parts coupled together and comprising first and second castellated members 9, 22 on the parts and adapted to interengage when the screw-threads are fully interengaged, the member 9 being spring-urged into the locking position thereof. The part 5 carries a castellated sleeve 9 slidably mounted on the screw-threaded member 7, screwed on to the part 5, by bearing balls 10 located in channels 11, 12 or, alternatively, by interengaging splines, a spring 13 being located between the part 5 and the sleeve; the valve 15 is formed with fluid passages and urged by the spring 16 to a closed position. The part 20 includes an internally screw-threaded sleeve 22 and a valve 27 urged by a spring 28 on to a seating formed on a probe 24 having cylindrical and frusto-conical end portions 24a, 24b which co-operate with a correspondingly shaped recess in the valve 15 so that the minimum amount of air is trapped between the probe and valve when the coupling parts are connected. In the coupling operation, the multi-start screw-threads are engaged together, the sleeve 9 being pushed back by the sleeve 22 while the latter is rotated to the fully screwed up position when the sleeve 9 springs into the sleeve 22; unlocking of the parts is effected by pulling back the sleeve 9 whereby the sleeve 22 can be rotated to uncouple the parts. The valve 27 becomes seated on the member 7 before being unseated from the valve seat provided on the probe and before the valve 15 becomes unseated.
