Abstract

1,147,423. Electrostatic loud - speakers. DECCA Ltd. 24 May, 1967 [25 May, 1966], No. 23443/66. Heading H4J. An electrostatic loud-speaker employing an electret has a source of energizing current arranged to apply to the electret an electric field of sufficient magnitude and duration to ensure the normal operation of the electret. An amplifier or radio receiver 10 applies an output signal to plates 13, 14 of an electrostatic loud-speaker 15 having an electret 16. A conductive layer 1 6a is sandwiched between two layers 16b, 16c of polyethylene terephthalate. When a switch 18 is closed, an electric supply source 17 triggers a timing circuit 19 which causes a generator 20 to generate for a few seconds a direct voltage which is applied across the two halves of the electret 16. If the electret 16 has only one plastics layer the voltage is applied between the layer 16a and the plate 13 or 14 on the other side of the plastics layer. Resistors 21, 22 avoid loss of signal from the apparatus 10 to the generator 20, which may form a short circuit to remove the voltage remaining after cessation of the polarizing voltage. A plurality of loud-speakers may be polarized simultaneously.
