Abstract
1,146,317. Valves. NEWMAN, HENDER & CO. Ltd. 28 April, 1967 [19 May, 1966], No. 22260/66. Heading F2V. [Also in Division B3] A valve operating stem, which is either itself adapted to be rotated to open and close the valve, or is adapted to be engaged by a rotatable member for moving the stem axially to open and close the valve, is made of axially distinct parts of metal welded together. The material of one part 2, for connection to the valve member and to be exposed to the controlled fluid, is chosen primarily for its corrosion resistance, e.g. an austenitic stainless steel, whereas another part 3, 4, for operating the stem from outside the valve and not exposed to the fluid, is chosen primarily for its mechanical strength, e.g. a martensitic steel. The parts are friction-welded at a joint 5. As shown, there is an additional optional friction welded joint 6 in the part 3, 4, to reduce wastage of material in manufacture. The stem is screwed at 7 to engage a fixed nut or a rotatable nut for moving the stem axially. The device is applied to a globe or gate valve, Figs. 2-4 (not shown), or to rotatable valves such as butterfly valves.
