Abstract
1,145,072. Discharge tubes. SIEMENS A.G. 23 March. 1966 [24 March, 1965], No. 12759/66. Heading H1D. A magnetic focusing system for focusing an electron beam along an axis, e.g. for a travelling wave tube, includes two sets of opposed rectangular permanent magnets arranged one either side of the axis with like poles adjacent the axis, the height of the magnets successively decreasing such that their distance from the axis increases steadily from one end of the system, except for one pair of magnets which are shortened to provide a recess 4 for the introduction of a coupling waveguide in a perpendicular direction, magnetic compensation being provided by further opposed magnets 5, having the same pole as the two sets adjacent the axis, and mounted both in line with the magnets bounding the recess, and also lying in the perpendicular direction; the outer poles of all the magnets are linked by a magnetically soft screening member 2 which extends beyond the shortest mag - net either, as shown, to an iris plate extending across the axis, or to a similar system having its magnets of the other polarity adjacent the axis, i.e. in the arrangement shown, the iris plate may be omitted. Temperature compensation may be provided by arranging highly temperature sensitive magnets in parallel with the compensating magnets.
