Abstract

1,140,916. Clamps. CHARLES CHURCHILL Ltd. 20 Oct., 1966 [3' Nov., 1965], No; 46567/65. Headings E2A and E2B.. [Also in Division B3] A hydraulic clamp comprises a pair of jaws 28 for gripping the parts to be clamped, spring means 4 urging the jaws to closed position and a cylinder and piston assembly which is operative, when supplied with liquid under pressure to one side of the piston, to overcome the spring means and so free the jaws for movement apart and, when supplied with liquid under pressure to the other side of .the piston, to force the jaws together. In the construction shown the jaws 20 are carried by two arms 21 which are pivotally mounted on a pin 7 which is carried by a U shaped bracket 31; the piston and cylinder assembly engages the arms through locating screws 8 and 9 fitted to the arms. The spring means 4 consists of a plurality of disc springs disposed in the cylinder 3 and causing the piston 2 to rise out of the cylinder thereby forcing apart the two arms and closing the jaws. The clamping pressure of the springs 4 is augmented by applying hydraulic liquid to a chamber 5 in the piston and cylinder assembly and release of the jaws is accomplished by applying the hydraulic liquid to a chamber 1. The locating screws 8 and 9 are held in contact with the piston and cylinder assembly by a spring 6 which is weaker than the springs 4.
