In an electro-chemical cell, fluid to be examined is contained in an inner chamber surrounded by an outer chamber, free of the fluid, in which pressure is automatically maintained equal to that in the inner chamber, and leads to electrodes in the inner chamber penetrate the walls of both chambers. In Fig. 1, electrodes 3, 4, 5 are connected to conductors which extend through the walls of an electro-chemical measuring cell 2. Changes of pressure within the cell relative to the gas pressure in a hood 1 surrounding the cell are detected by a differential bellows 14 which operates one of switches 20, 21 and hence one of solenoid operated valves 22, 23 to increase or decrease gas pressure in the hood until it equals the pressure in the cell. Hood pressure is indicated by a gauge 32 and the cell, which is heated by a resistor 11 associated with a copper base 6 and controlled by a thermocouple 12, is provided with a thermometer 79 and is illuminated by a lamp 41 for viewing through an eye-piece 34. The test cell may form part of a nozzle which is surrounded by a hood having a pressure control system similar to that described above.
