Abstract
113,131. Nelson, J. Feb. 6, 1917. Mineral and tar oils, purifying.-Hydrocarbon oils or spirits having a. disagreeable odour, a yellowish or reddish brown colour, and a tendency to develop gumminess, and particularly the products obtained by cracking, are purified by treatment with an unsaturated fatty oil such as linseed oil with or without phosphoric acid. The oil may be mixed with linseed oil and the mixture distilled, or the oil may be passed in the form of vapour through a heated chamber containing pumice soaked in linseed oil or through a heated tower down which linseed oil flows. In the latter case, the oil vapours may afterwards be passed through a heated chamber containing phosphoric acid pumice. The oil is freed from water before purification, as by leading its vapours through a drying-agent. The treated oil is further purified by storing over a dilute solution of caustic soda, or by passing its vapours over heated soda lime which may be mixed with coke. The Provisional Specification describes the treatment of oils with syrupy phosphoric acid alone.
