Abstract

A device for applying a substance to slides is characterized by the provision of a guide way consisting of upper guide rails 10a, 10b defining a basic plane and deformable lower guide rails 12 elastically biased towards said upper guide rails, a feed hopper 13 having an outlet passage 13a for supplying substance on to a slide moving along said basic plane, the outlet passage 13a .being flush with respect to said basic plane, and actuating means advancing slides between the upper guide rails 10a, 10b and the lower guide rails 12 along said basic plane at uniform speed. The outlet of the feed hopper 13 is adjustable by a movable slider 15 actuated by pairs of eccentrics against biasing springs. The actuating means is preferably formed by a pressure fluid operated system comprising a piston 20 slidably arranged in a cylinder 21 and control means such as a four-way valve 22 for admitting and exhausting pressure fluid to and from, alternately, opposite sides of said piston. The piston 20 is connected to an advancing head 55 which advances slides 40 one at a time between the upper guide rails 10a, 10b and lower guide rails 12, from a stock of slides. The head 55 has cams which actuate, through lever systems, clamping jaws which clamp the lowermost but one slide 40<SP>1</SP> and raises it and all the slides above it slightly so that the lowermost slide is free to be fed into the guides. The stock of slides is then lowered and at the next operation of piston 20 the next slide is fed into the guides. Narrow auxiliary slides 60 are placed between slides 40 to close the outlet passage 13a of the hopper 13 between the passings of two subsequent slides 40.
