Abstract

1,129,562. Crushing apparatus. VICKERS Ltd. 21 March, 1967 [7 March, 1966], No. 9967/66. Heading B2A. [Also in Division B3] A method of generating a shock wave by exploding a wire 9 comprises feeding the wire across a gap between electrodes 3, 4, contact between the wire and the electrode 4 being avoided, and the transfer of current between the electrode 4 and the wire being effected by electrical breakdown of a path therebetween, so that the adjoining non-exploded part of the wire does not become welded to the electrode when the explosion occurs. The method may be applied to forming metal or crushing rock or ceramics, the wire preferably being immersed in water. A liner 6 of p.v.c., p.t.f.e., polythene, urethane rubber or Perspex (registered Trade Mark) is used in the electrode 4, which is made of mild steel tipped with high tensile steel. Within the liner is a collet 7 and, if required to facilitate feeding of the wire, a metal tube 8. The pressure wave generated by exploding the wire bends the unexploded portion within the electrode. To remove the bend, the wire is drawn back through the collet 7 before being again fed forward across the electrode gap. Aluminium, copper, iron, tungsten, magnesium or nickel wire of 16-28 s.w.g. may be fed from a spool to the electrode 4 and across a gap of ¢-24 ins.
