1,129,338. Hydro - pneumatic oscillation dampers. FICHTEL & SACHS A.G. 20 May, 1966 [26 May, 1965], No. 22456/66. Heading F2S. In a single-tube hydropneumatic oscillation damper in which a piston 20 with a rod 16 and damping bores 22 works in a cylinder 10 and a cup-shaped free piston 24, closed toward the piston-rod end, divides the cylinder into a damping chamber 30 and a compensating chamber 32, the compensating chamber contains a gas cushion 38 and sufficient liquid so that, with the damper in a vertical position and the rod 16 uppermost and fully retracted the face between the free piston 24 and the cylinder lies at least partially below the liquid level 34 set inside the piston 24. This ensures that there is always a liquid seal between the damping and compensating chambers. The liquid can also be sufficient so that, with the damper turned through 180 degrees, the liquid level inside the compensating chamber lies above the upper end of the free piston 24. The latter has a seal 28. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown), the open end of the free piston is closed by a plate (150) having damping orifices which are controlled by one-way valves (152- 154).
